Team Values

Safety

It is important that team members leave as healthy as they arrive. It is key that team leaders set a good example of a safe workplace environment and demonstrate how to minimize risks. Similarly, mental health and safety is just as important. Team leaders should demonstrate appropriate self care and respect others demonstrating self care.

Professionalism

Team members should act professionally and treat each other with respect. This includes interactions between students, interactions between mentors, and interactions between students and mentors. Professionalism and respect are key in maintaining a team. Mentors and team leaders should be a shining example to the newer members of the team. There will be internal disagreements, but mentors should set an example on how to handle these respectfully and efficiently.

Community

Team members should treat all entities with respect and professionalism. The challenges that other organizations face are often unknown. We should treat the people in those organizations with respect both publicly and privately within the team. This includes teams we compete with, schools, sponsors, and other organizations we may interact with such as hotels, restaurants, etc.

Communication

Team members should recognize information that needs to be communicated and deliver it to the appropriate person. It should be communicated via the appropriate methods, usually via the related Slack channel. Subteams should actively initiate communication with other subteams to provide more efficient outcomes for team projects.

Challenge

Mentors and team leaders should foster an environment where other members can be appropriately challenged and lead them to success. The team often has students of diverse backgrounds. The team’s goal is maximizing the opportunities for students to be challenged at their appropriate level. Mentors should guide the students to success in these challenges while still keeping them challenged. Students should be challenged in skills that they typically enjoy as well as in skills that are essential for future careers and life. These challenges can push members towards competition goals, but also include those career or life goals as well.
